District Attorney Colom: “Mississippi deserves a senator who fights for lower costs, not one who tells you your grocery list is your problem”

Columbus, MS — Following widely-circulated remarks by Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith telling Mississippians struggling with high grocery costs to simply “eat something else,” District Attorney and U.S. Senate candidate Scott Colom released the following statement:

“Mississippi families aren’t choosing between beef and other proteins as a lifestyle preference, they’re stretching every dollar to put food on the table. Meanwhile, Cindy Hyde-Smith sits on the Senate Agriculture Committee, and her answer to Mississippians struggling at the grocery store is to just eat something else? That’s an insult to the people who sent her to D.C. Mississippi deserves a senator who fights for lower costs, not one who tells you your grocery list is your problem.”

Hyde-Smith serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee—making her directly responsible for farm and food policy at a time when Mississippi families are being squeezed by rising costs at the grocery store. Beef prices nationally have climbed sharply over the past year, a burden felt acutely in Mississippi, where nearly one in five residents lives in poverty and the state consistently ranks among the nation’s highest for food insecurity. Mississippi farmers and ranchers, who contribute more than $9 billion annually to the state’s economy, are also navigating rising input costs driven by tariff-fueled supply chain pressures. This isn’t the first time Hyde-Smith has been out of touch with Mississippi families; she previously called tariffs “really good.”
