District Attorney Colom: “When Mississippians hurt, Mississippians show up to help”

Columbus, MS — District Attorney Scott Colom, candidate for U.S. Senate, today announced a community goods drive to collect essential supplies for Mississippi families recovering from the May 6 tornadoes that tore through Brookhaven, Bogue Chitto, and other communities across southwest Mississippi.

Drop-offs will be accepted at the Colom for U.S. Senate campaign headquarters, located at 811 E River Place in Jackson, during the following hours:

  • Wednesday, May 13: 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM CT
  • Thursday, May 14: 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM CT
  • Friday, May 15: 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM CT

Items most needed include:

  • Bottled water
  • Non-perishable food
  • Baby formula and diapers
  • Toiletries
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Paper towels and toilet paper
  • Pet food
  • Blankets and pillows
  • Flashlights and batteries

All items collected will be delivered directly to families in Brookhaven and other affected communities in the days following the drive.

“Our neighbors in southwest Mississippi lost everything overnight, and when Mississippians hurt, Mississippians show up to help,” said District Attorney Colom. “Whether it’s a case of water, a bag of diapers, or a blanket, what you bring will reach a family who needs it. Let’s show up for each other.”

The May 6 storm system produced at least seven confirmed tornadoes across Mississippi, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. More than 200 homes were damaged in Lincoln County, including the Wash Trailer Park in Bogue Chitto, where most homes were destroyed. Lamar County reported 275 homes and 50 apartment units damaged or inaccessible. At least 17 Mississippians were injured; thankfully, no fatalities have been confirmed.

Mississippians who are unable to drop off items in person are encouraged to support the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, the American Red Cross, and other local recovery organizations responding on the ground.
