Scott Colom, a seventh-generation Mississippian with a 94% conviction rate as tough-on-crime District Attorney, slams Hyde-Smith’s votes to cut Medicaid and her refusal to fight for Mississippi
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 3, 2025
Columbus, MS — Today, seventh-generation Mississippian and District Attorney Scott Colom launched his U.S. Senate campaign against Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith in Mississippi.
Scott was born and raised in Columbus, Mississippi, where he still lives with his wife and two daughters. Guided by his Christian faith, Scott dedicated his life to serving his neighbors and keeping them safe from violent criminals – serving as a prosecutor, judge, and now District Attorney. With a 94% conviction rate, Scott has held corrupt sheriffs accountable and solved a record number of cold cases.
Cindy Hyde-Smith has abandoned Mississippians and put out-of-state billionaires first. Ranked one of the least effective U.S. Senators in the country two years into her first term, Hyde-Smith has hurt Mississippians with her vote to cut Medicaid and put Mississippi’s rural hospitals at risk of closure.

SCOTT COLOM: Alright girls, look in that camera right there, and say your lines.
DAUGHTERS: Lights. Camera. Action!
SCOTT: My name’s Scott Colom, and those two little girls you just saw are my entire world. And they’re two big reasons why I’m running for the United States Senate.
For the last ten years I’ve worked as the District Attorney here in Northeast Mississippi where I’ve won 94% of my trials and solved a record number of cold cases.
But the best crime stopper is a job and an education. Cindy Hyde-Smith doesn’t get that because she’s too concerned about her job in D.C.
And her latest vote is gonna run up our debt, kick over a hundred thousand Mississippians off their health care, and put our hospitals at risk – all so billionaires in California and New York can get a tax break.
That’s not who I am. I’m a seventh generation Mississippian from Columbus. My father was a Republican who worked for Ronald Reagan.
My mom served as a judge—she was tough and fair, both in the courtroom and at home. She kept us in line, didn’t she Dad?
SCOTT’S DAD: She STILL keeps us in line.
SCOTT: Amen.
I found the love of my life right here in Mississippi… [winks] How you doing?
[NADIA shakes her head]
SCOTT: And I coach my two little girls Luci and Madi’s soccer team. Who wants to run some laps!
SCOTT’S DAUGHTERS: Nooooo!
SCOTT: Look, when people outside of Mississippi think about our state, they think about our past. I think it’s finally time to look to our future.
I want to boost wages for Mississippi workers, because let’s face it, everything still costs way too much.
NADIA: Scott Colom, you do NOT do the grocery shopping.
SCOTT: But I do see the bill, though.
I want to eliminate income taxes on teachers because far too many are leaving our state. No taxes on cops, either. I work with them every day and see how they put their lives on the line for us.
And I will work with anyone, from any party, to save Mississippi’s hospitals…which Cindy Hyde-Smith put on the chopping block.
Look – I’m tired of Mississippi getting the short end of the stick. I know we can do better.
I’m Scott Colom – this is my family – and I’m running for Senate to make life a little easier for yours. Because Mississippi matters. I hope you’ll join me. Ok girls, last line…
SCOTT’S DAUGHTERS: That’s a wrap!
ABOUT SCOTT COLOM:
Scott Colom is a proud seventh-generation Mississippian who’s been a prosecutor, a judge, a widely-praised District Attorney, and now a candidate for the U.S. Senate.
Rooted in Mississippi Values
Born and raised in Columbus, Mississippi, Scott and his wife Nadia are proud parents of two (eighth-generation Mississippian) daughters. He’s the son of retired Judge Dorothy Colom – the first African-American to be elected to her region’s Chancery Court – and Wilbur Colom, an attorney and one-time Republican who worked for Ronald Reagan.
Scott is a lifelong member of Missionary Union Baptist Church in Columbus. In his spare time, Scott coaches sports and a high school mock trial team.
Running for the U.S. Senate – Because Mississippi Should Come First
Guided by his Christian faith and his love of Mississippi, Scott Colom announced his campaign for the U.S. Senate in September of 2025. He’s running to lower costs for families, save our Mississippi hospitals, and bring good jobs home. Our current U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith isn’t working for us anymore, voting against Mississippi jobs and investments because it serves her donors’ agenda. Scott will always put Mississippi first – and he’ll work with anyone, Republican or Democrat, to get things done for our state.
A Reformer, Keeping Our Communities Safe
As District Attorney, Scott Colom has surged resources to prosecute violent crimes, closed a record number of cold cases, and won 94% of his trials.
Scott Colom was elected District Attorney in 2015 when, at the age of just 32, he unseated a 27-year incumbent while running on a reform platform that called for prioritizing resources to hold violent criminals accountable.
Among Scott’s successes keeping our communities safe:
- Securing convictions in over 15 high-profile murder cases.
- Bringing a predator to justice for the rape, robbery, and kidnapping of a college student at Mississippi State University, getting a sentence of 105 years in prison.
- Holding accountable a corrupt sheriff who was trading favors for sexual materials from inmates.
Scott has emphasized the importance of preventing crime by making sure criminals know they will be held accountable – and also pushing for more jobs and opportunities, which he knows is the best way to prevent crime.
Northeastern Mississippi has embraced Scott’s approach. Since first winning election to his swing district in 2015, Scott has been re-elected twice with support from Republicans, Independents and Democrats, most recently with a winning margin that exceeded national Democrats by 10 percentage points.
