Columbus, MS — Following the partial federal government shutdown that began at midnight, impacting the Department of Homeland Security and agencies under its umbrella like the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), District Attorney and U.S. Senate candidate Scott Colom released the following statement:

“Cindy Hyde-Smith’s job is to keep the government working for Mississippi, but her failure to lead has helped push us into yet another government shutdown that could hurt critical disaster recovery efforts in our state. A shutdown is the last thing Mississippi families need while our communities are still reeling from the recent winter storm, our hospitals are still struggling, and health care costs are still crushing families.

“Senator Hyde-Smith is more focused on playing D.C. politics than keeping the government open to serve Mississippians and address these issues. I’ll work with anyone, Republican or Democrat, to deliver for our state, because that’s what real leadership looks like.”

Hyde-Smith serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee and specifically on the Homeland Security Appropriations subcommittee—making her directly responsible for funding the agencies now shut down. In Mississippi, FEMA is actively supporting ice storm recovery through $3.75 million in rapid emergency funding and deploying personnel to the state emergency operations center. The shutdown also affects the Coast Guard, which supports $18 billion in economic activity at the Port of Pascagoula and provides search and rescue operations along the Gulf Coast, as well as TSA officers at Mississippi airports.

About Scott: Scott Colom is a seventh-generation Mississippian, proud husband and father of two, and district attorney who fights every day to keep Mississippians safe. Guided by his Christian faith, Scott has dedicated his life to serving his neighbors and keeping them safe from violent criminals. Now he’s running to lower costs for families, save our Mississippi hospitals, and bring good jobs home. Scott loves his state and will always put Mississippi first – and he’ll work with anyone, Republican or Democrat, to get things done for us.
