Columbus, MS — Today, on the last day Mississippians can sign up for health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act’s health care marketplace, U.S. Senate Candidate and District Attorney Scott Colom issued the following statement:

“Sadly, starting tomorrow it’s estimated some 200,000 of our neighbors will lose health insurance because Cindy Hyde-Smith voted multiple times to make health care less affordable. In fact, instead of working to keep health care costs from spiking, just yesterday Senate Republicans blocked legislation yet again to extend critical health care tax credits and help low- and middle-income Mississippians afford to stay insured,” said Colom.

According to local news reports, ACA marketplace health care plans in Mississippi have increased 41% on average, causing an estimated 200,000 local residents to “become uninsured due to the cost increases.” Similarly, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reported 338,159 Mississippians selected ACA marketplace plans during the 2025 open enrollment period, but local officials report only around 67,000 had renewed their coverage for 2026 as of late December 2025.

Colom continued: “Cindy Hyde-Smith brags a lot about her relationship with President Trump, but she couldn’t be bothered to use her close ties to the President to try and help Mississippians keep their affordable health care coverage. She’s much more concerned about looking out for millionaires and billionaires, but Mississippians want someone who can work with the President and others in Washington to make life more affordable for folks in our state, including when it comes to health care. That’s what I’m focused on.”
