On the 250th anniversary of American independence, Colom will honor the unsung Mississippians who keep the country’s promise

Columbus, MS — On Saturday, July 4, District Attorney and U.S. Senate candidate Scott Colom will deliver Fourth of July remarks at the Jacinto Fourth of July Festival in Alcorn County. Marking the nation’s 250th anniversary, Colom will pay tribute to the everyday Mississippians who put people first, and make the case for a state whose leaders do the same.

The Jacinto Fourth of July Festival, a decades-old tradition at the historic 1854 courthouse, is one of Mississippi’s best-known civic gatherings and a longtime stop for candidates for local, state, and federal office. Time-permitting, District Attorney Colom will be available to media for comment immediately following his remarks.

Ahead of Saturday, Colom also released the following statement in observance of the holiday and the 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence:

“Two hundred and fifty years ago, a few men in Philadelphia put their names to an idea bigger than they were: that we are all created equal, and that this country was built to keep getting better than it was the day before. Many of our forefathers didn’t live up to that idea, not that day and not for a long time after. But they wrote it down, and every generation since has had to decide whether to move that idea forward or let it slip.

“Despite our checkered history, I love this country and I’m proud of how far we’ve come, because Mississippi has always been full of people working to achieve the promise born from our nation’s founding. Not the names in the history books, but the ones you will never read about: the foster parent who takes in a child no one else will, the nurse who stays long past her shift, the teacher who refuses to give up on a kid who cannot yet read. They do not do it for recognition. They do it because they understand something Washington keeps forgetting: that you measure a person, and a country, by whether they put other people, their fellow Americans, first.

“That is the standard I am running to meet, and that all of us as countrymen are called to strive toward: to honor the promise of building a more perfect union not just on the Fourth of July, but on all the ordinary days, too. That’s the definition of putting Mississippi, and America, first. As we mark 250 years of our great nation, Mississippi deserves leaders who stand not with Washington and the powerful, but with the regular, hardworking people holding this state together.

“The promise is in good hands here in Mississippi, and I am asking Mississippians to keep working to help us keep it. If we do, I know our country will continue to thrive for the next 250 years, and beyond.”
